I love the library. Today I made a trip, I planned to get 2-3 books, I left with 12-15. I carefully walked through the parking lot in the pouring rain with my huge pile of books this afternoon, not my best planning, but still great. I love that the library offers the opportunity to read… for free, oh yeah, and the books have to be returned so they don’t clutter my house (yeah I have a thing about clutter). I have loved the library since I was a kid.
When I was in first grade I was in the lower reading group (I know, what a crazy confession), let’s just say my dad wasn’t thrilled, and neither was I. So my parents decided that the summer between 1st and 2nd grade I was going to become a better reader. I had to read 5 “chapter” books between June and September, sounds easy, but when you are 6 and reading is tough for you it isn’t as easy as you think. I started with the Boxcar Children #16 (yeah I remember), the first 20 pages were tough… but after that I was hooked, and in case you were wondering, I wasn’t in the lower reading group in 2nd grade. That summer I read all the Little House on the Praire books, the Little House in the Ozarks (bet ya didn’t know about those), and more than one Boxcar Children book. From then on the library was one of my favorite places, don’t worry I had friends and played outside too, but I did love to read. My childhood was filled with the Alden children, the Ingalls, the Borrowers, the Littles, the Boxcar Children, and the Hardy Boys, I wanted to be Harriet the Spy, run of with the BFG, and solve the mystery like Nancy Drew. I read every Babysitters Club (that’s right), Little Sister, Nancy Drew, Boxcar Children, Littles, Ronald Dahl, Sweet Valley Twins, and Animorphs (yeah that was an awful series) book published. I loved them.
Something about going to the library transports me back to those lazy summer days with nothing to do but read, now to just choose which one to start with?
So what is on my reading list this time? Half the Sky, Ladies of Liberty, Abigail and John (apparently I liked the American Revolution section), One Thousand Women, , and The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Society among others…

I love-love-loved this post! I'm excited for when you get to take Mikey to the library to select books for him to read. Even better, I'm excited for you to come visit Temecula and take him to the new library here--that place is fantastic!
I thought Nancy Drew was from my generation. I loved those books.
