While we were preparing for Michael we purchased pacifiers. Okay to be fair we purchased several different styles so we could find the "right" one. So far Michael doesnt have much interest in the pacifier. He will take it for a second when he is hungry or going to sleep, but other than that the plastic just doesnt do it for him. People warned us that introducing artificial nipples early would result in "nipple confusion", rest assured that it most certainly has not. Anyway so we purchased these items, try to give them to him, and there just isnt much interest. This would be fine, except there are times when he isnt hungry but sucking on something comforts him... enter the fist.
Remember how I promised to provide more insight on Mikey and his new found love... his fist. Here goes, I am a little bit afraid that we have a thumb sucker on our hands. While sucking his thumb would be so convenient because let's face it you can lose the thumb I am against it. Not just a little bit against it, I am against it like I am against not vaccinating, mushrooms, and video games. Why the harsh feelings towards thumb sucking? Well... as a reformed thumb sucker myself (I know how embarrassing) I know what can happen if this becomes a habit. He hasnt figured out how to put his thumb in his mouth yet, mostly because he cant figure out how to maneuver just his thumb, but he has figure out how to get his fist up to his mouth. While it is cute at the moment, I dont think it will be so cute when he is say... 5 and going off to kindergarten.
The thumb sucking tendency started to surface while we were on vacation. While my parents thought it was so funny (they paid for my braces so they are laughing), my sweet nephew Jake wasnt so amused. Every time Mikey put his fist to his mouth Jake would kindly push it down and say "no baby Mikey". Way to look out for the little guy Jake!
Jake's sweet brother, Caleb, sucks his thumb. I think that might be why he is so anti. Dont you just want to hug these cute guys?
Jake looking out for the little guy!

Ash, I couldn't agree more! The thumb sucking habit really is so ANNOYING! And my kid does it. The benefits are it is self soothing, but at church, or in public they don't use it to sooth them. You can't stick the thumb in their mouth and expect them to do it, it's their own choice. This is frustrating to me because many times I'd like (or others) would like Caleb to chill out and quiet down. But no such luck the thumb doesn't enter. Normally it's when he's tired. But SINCE the return of the thermal blanket, socks and now dish towels into Calebs life he will suck his thumb! OH MY HEAVENS it's driving me crazy!!! Today, ALL socks were taken out of drawers and placed up even higher! Good luck and I wish for your sake you will keep trying with the pacifier!! :)
