Growing Up

Mikey is growing up. I have mixed feelings about this, on one hand he is so much fun as he grows and more of his personality shines through, my independence has started to come back a bit (one 30 second increment at a time), and my nerves are less frazzled, but on the other hand he is growing so fast and it seems like before we know it he will be 16 and think we are the lamest parents ever (yes I know that will happen long before 16 but go with me here).

One great example of his development and my mixed feelings is his recent move to his own room at night. When we got back from our trip we put him in there and he was fine- he didn’t cry, didn’t wake up more often, he just peacefully went to sleep. I think some of the reason the transition was so easy was that he was used to sleeping in new places and some of it was that he was so exhausted from the trip that a decent nights sleep in a quiet place was just what he needed. But as much as I hate to admit it, some of it might have been that he didn’t need us as much at night. Don’t get me wrong he REALLY needs us every 2-4 hours, but after that he is fine to go back to his bed. He has ended up with us in the mornings… because I am lazy and at a certain point I am tired of getting up, but if given the option I am sure he would be perfectly happy and content to go back to sleep in his own bed.

How do you reconcile these mixed feelings- I don’t want him to be needy and clingy and hate his room- I love that he is so happy to go to bed at night in his room, but I don’t want him to grow up too fast! In the meantime, yesterday we spent most of the day trying to nap… while he is a great sleeper at night, the daytime is another painful story, so I will count my blessings, and continue fighting over naps.

They do just that...grow up. Then once they reach a certain age it means to have yet another one! That's the thing to worry more about when that time comes then the fact he's getting bigger! :) I'm so glad he's doing so well at night!!! You are SO lucky.
