Half the Sky

I recently started reading a book titled "Half the Sky". I can't remember if it was recommended by a friend or it was mentioned on NPR, MaryAnne, I figured you would forgive me if I mixed you up with Renee Montagne. Anyway so I started reading this book, and while the book is interesting, well written, and insightful the topics discussed are sickening, at least the part I have gotten through. The book examines the unequal treatment and difficult conditions that women in some parts of the world experience, and it is a great one if women's health or any other women's issues interest you, but it is an awful book if you want to live in a rose colored world where violence against women and oppression are unheard of.

I will admit that this isnt the first book or time that I have delved into the issue of gender inequality, I spent some time working in a women's shelter, and did quite a bit of research during my school days, but still, I dont think these topics are something that I can become desensitized to, every time I think about it I feel sick. As I have been reading the book, Brian and I have had a few brief discussions about some of the topics, and I have come to the conclusion that my cat (yes my cat) leads a better life that some women and girls, awful.

Despite some of the awful things described in the book, it does provide a ray of hope, yes things are awful, but in some parts of the world, women and girls, and men, or fighting to educate and empower women and improve not only the life of one, but the lives of many in these communities that have previously been hazardous to women. This is wonderful!

Today as I listened to Elder M. Russell Ballard's Conference address I was once again reminded of the power that educating and empowering women can have on family relationships. I was also reminded of the love that our Heavenly Father has for each of his children, regardless of social status, past transgressions, or what circumstances we may find ourself in.

Read it, but be prepared for some unpleasant topics.

Happy to be mixed up. Just to warn you, I feel like the solutions get a little repetitive toward the end. I think somehow we should start a book club together. I don't know Skype? I bet a cohort book club would be really fun. I'm sure some people are too busy, but I'm not, and I'd LOVE it!
