Emily saw this adorable craft on pinterest and it was one of those moments when you think to yourself "clearly we will be making this, clearly!" So we did, and I think it turned out pretty well despite what this photo might show. For a great tutorial see the link above, but if you want to know what we did... well stay tuned and scroll down.
First off, we decided to buy a sheet of the cheapest MDF Home Depot had to offer a few weeks back. I asked (well had Brian ask) the cutter guy to cut the sheet into 6x6 blocks for me, and he did. So for $5 I had 32 blocks... yes 32. Anyway the original tutorial uses coasters but now you realize why I didnt.
So what did we do? First step was painting the blocks- one white, one green, one orange, and one black. We used paint because we had it but I am sure paper and modge podge would be equally great.
The original had a ghost instead of a mummy, but we thought the mummy would be cuter, and as long as you dont look too closely at my lack of art skill it is darling.
After we painted we did the faces (well a few days elapsed because we forgot about the project, but you get it). Originally I painted the faces on... then I realized that I am a sucky (yes that's right) painter and I ended up using vinyl, I bet if it would work out just fine with paint if you have some talent there, and paper and modge podge again are probably just peachy.
So since I am a sucky painter I cut out circles (big and small) with black and white vinyl on my sihouette. Then I stuck them to the blocks (tough). For the pumpkin I used a paint pen (great purchase) to draw the face and lines, this is a great option. I also used the paint pen to draw the lines on the mummy and color around the eyes, clearly the mummy is something that I need more practice doing. Oh yeah and the paint pen came in handy one last time for Frankenstein's eyebrows, mouth, and stitches...the hair is badly cut vinyl (with scissors). The spider's mouth is also vinyl and the legs... well those are tree twigs painted black and glued on (with hot glue of course).
Then we covered the whole thing with a nice thick coat of matte modge podge, you know to smooth it out, make it shiny(ish), and just finish it off.
Then we glued the whole thing to a piece of 1inch thick black ribbon (but you can do whatever you like), made a loop at the top and took this lovely photo. Isnt it darling! I am already brainstorming a christmas one, I see reindeer, santa, a snowman... and I need a 4th...
Side Project
Now this little project is something else em came up with to use some of the earlier mentioned 32 squares. So darling! How did we do this? Well she painted the block, designed the sign on the Silhouette, cut it, stuck it on, and of course covered it with a nice thick layer of modge podge. Then she drilled two holes for the ribbon, hunted through the ribbon stash, tied it on, and had a great time admiring her handiwork.
