12 Month Stats and Update

Mr. Michael went to the doctor for his 12 month checkup on Monday and guess what, he is still a big guy (shocker).
Weight: 24 pounds, 6 ounces
Height: 32 inches
Head: 18 3/4 inches

He has dropped from the 90% down to the 75% percentile for weight but remains in the 97% (or off the charts) for height. He is slimming down with all that crawling, but man this kid is tall!

So now that we have his stats what to say about this little guy:

-I am going to have to start calling him my "little texas tornado", this kid is BUSY. He loves to pull out all the books, DVDs, plastic containers, and baby dishes. Making a mess is his forte. He looks at you with a big proud grin when he is caught, and then there is nothing to do but smile back and put everything away so he can get it out again.

-naps are still...not his favorite, although he has come a long way, let's just say his siblings better be the best sleepers ever.

-He loves to read. Sometimes he is more interested in turning the pages, but sometimes (more often than naught) he likes to sit and listen to the stories. Some of his favorites are Brown Bear, Brown Bear, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Puppies and Kittens, and Food. We leave a book in his bed so he can read himself to sleep or read quietly when it is naptime and a large portion of the time when I come back the book is open and he is either reading or sleeping on it. When we sit in the rocking chair he points to the books and says “bok”, I am going to just say that is how he says “book” because he makes the same sound every time.

-No words (besides “bok”) yet, but I think it will be soon. He babbles all day, not just monosyllabic “words”, but full sentences with voice inflection, he seems frustrated that we don’t understand what he is saying. He responds when we ask him a question, so I think his comprehension is increasing.

-He says "bah" whenever he points to things, we think he means "that". He has a new nickname "bah" because he always makes that sound.

-Michael loves music, when music comes on he either starts to dance or sing (or a combination depending on his mood). His favorite song is still  George Strait’s “Go On” and he smiles and wiggles every time it comes on.

-He crawls super fast now, and does what we affectionately call “the charging rhino”. He crawls with his head down (as if he had a horn) and roars, very funny, and slightly strange.

-When Michael eats he will squint his eyes and say either “mmmmm” or “me me me”, sometimes it sounds like he is upset but as soon as he finishes his little show he smiles at us.

-He can clap! He learned to clap on 7/9/12 and has been clapping like crazy since. He will clap along to “If You’re Happy and You Know It”, “Do As I’m Doing”, and the “Howdy” song (Hello Primary song). He loves to clap, I think mostly because we get really excited every time he does it.

-He still loves his sandbox, although these days he loves to try and crawl in and out of it. He does the same thing with laundry baskets, any obstacle makes things more fun.
-Michael is still a GREAT eater. Some of his favorites are: yogurt, scrambled eggs (with cheese and spinach), blueberries, rice and beans, spaghetti, and wouldn’t you guess, cookies. He makes a HUGE mess and usually needs a bath after dinner. He drops things off his highchair when he is done with them (dinner, drink, forks). He can feed himself with his hands, but we are trying to teach him to use his utensils right now and he loves it.

-He understands cookies, and get extremely frustrated when someone else eats one and doesn’t share.

-He still loves to push buttons, and will press the ones on his toys over and over, let’s just say we all have the irritating hello song from his table stuck in our heads.

-He sleeps through the night, that's right, we all sleep through the night these days, it is lovely.

-He still loves to chase CJ, but has learned to back off when she needs her space.

-He is a nightmare at church, we love him tons, but he loves to be crazy, down, and loud during church, Sacrament is slightly less uplifting in our pew these days.

-He understands “no” (most of the time), but doesn’t always obey.

-He drinks cow’s milk (sorta). We stopped nursing on his birthday, yay for 12 months!, and have been slowly introducing him to cow’s milk over the past few weeks. Still not the hugest fan but he doesn’t seem as confused these days. He wont drink his milk from a sippy cup. We have tried letting him see the milk go in and several different types of sippy cups with no luck. He will take it from a bottle, so for the moment we are going with that. It makes us laugh that after 12 months he finally understands a bottle, right at the point when it is highly recommended they stop using bottles.

-He gets really excited when he sees Brian and does whatever he can to get his attention.

-He can request to be picked up these days, and will crawl up to you, with his right hand up, and just the middle finger on his left hand up, he will follow you in this position until he is picked up.

-Michael still points with his middle finger, not sure how he figured this one out, but it has been effective for him so he is going with it.

-Lately he has been a drool monster, he currently has 6 teeth (2 on the bottom and 4 on top), with more coming in! He has been pretty happy throughout the teething process with just a little bit of extra grouchiness during the afternoon.

- he LOVES water, the pool and the bath are his favorite, but he will splash in the sink or a bucket if given the chance. He loves to crawl along the edge of the pool, try and grab the fountains, and on occasion try to drink the water (we have tried to curb that). Bathtime remains one of his favorite times of day, and who can blame him.

-He loves to bite! Michael will come up to you when you are peacefully minding your own business and take a bite out of your leg, arm, or back, and then laugh, we’re working on this one.
We love our sweet Mikey!
