Several months ago we had a lesson on obedience and sacrifice. We were "discussing" the part of the Book of Mormon where Lehi is told to take his family and leave Jerusalem. I explained the the class that Lehi's family was asked to leave many of their nice things behind, we talked about how they would feel if Heavenly Father asked them to go live in a tent without most of their nice things. The girls looked at me horror struck- life without their toys- goodness gracious. As the lesson progressed we talked about how sometimes we are asked to sacrifice or give up things and I asked them how they would feel if they were asked to give up their favorite toys. One little girl looked at me very seriously and replied "I wouldnt, my favorite toy is a Barbie, and Jesus is a boy so he doesnt need Barbies." The other girls firmly agreed that they would not be asked to give up their Barbies, Littlest Pet Shops, or dolls because "Jesus is a boy" and boys dont need "girl toys". What do you say to that?

This post reminds me of the book I'm currently reading, Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture by Peggy Orenstein. It's more of a pop culture book than a scholarly book, but I think it gives some interesting insight into this "girl toys" vs "boy toys" thing. Interestingly, the author points it out that it may be boys who are more disadvantaged than girls because it's "acceptable" for a girl to play with boy toys and wear pants but unacceptable for boys to play with girl toys and wear dresses! It's an interesting and entertaining read if you ever get a chance.
