Let freedom ring, let the white dove sing...It's Independence Day

Let freedom ring
Let the white dove sing
Let the whole world know that today is a day of reckoning
Let the weak be strong
Let the right be wrong
Roll the stone away
Let the guilty pay
It’s Independence Day***

As a kid I loved holidays, sure Christmas was awesome and Halloween was fun but Independence Day was always my favorite. I loved going to the park near our house the night before and seeing the families that camped out in their RV’s for the “best” spot, I loved walking through the crowded park on the 4th and watching families enjoying their festive picnics, I loved the crowds, the food (my parents make AMAZING ribs) and the music. I loved watching our street fill up with cars as the day progressed, I loved visiting with neighbors and then finally walking to the top of our street to watch the fireworks as the local radio station broadcast patriotic music.

I love the festive, small town atmosphere associated with the holiday. I love the crowds that gather for the fireworks, the german chocolate cakes, the juicy watermelons, and the backyard BBQ’s (one of my favorite things about Utah is they have “2” 4th of July’s, one on the 4th and one on the 24th, I know they are different holidays but still fireworks, parades, BBQ’s). I love everything patriotic so it makes sense that this is my favorite holiday, but besides that I love that this is a “non gift” holiday. Don’t get me wrong I love getting presents and without “gift holidays” I would be out of a job, but I love that there is no pressure on this holiday. This is a relatively cheap holiday: there are very few decorations, there are no fancy meals, travel isn’t expected or required, and everyone can participate. I love that everyone has a reason to celebrate this holiday, and there is no wrong way to celebrate. I love that there is no pressure to “remember the true meaning” of this holiday, celebrating and remembering that this is a special day is enough.
Brian and I had a great 4th of July. Brian was able to meet Glenn Beck (he was SO excited), we bought a little BBQ and we were able to go watch the fireworks on the Provo Temple grounds with our good friends Kurtis and Megan. We walked to the Creamery for some ice cream after the fireworks and had a great time laughing about the boy’s mission stories (we rarely do this so it was fun). I hope that all of you had a wonderful Independence Day!

Watching the Fireworks, can you tell that I am in this picture?

**this is one of my favorite songs, by one of my favorite artists. If you havent heard it I suggest you remedy that. It is titled: "Independence Day", by Martina McBride.

YEAH!!! You have finally hit my genre of music. I know this song. I have the same love for the song too. Not to mention, that we share the same love for this holiday. It is impossible for me to keep a dry eye during several patriotic songs and moments. I'm truly grateful. I'm also grateful for the no gift holiday. But then again I am NEVER a gift giver...so I feel no guilt on this day, ever. Unless that is because I ate WAY too much yummy food. Too bad we don't share any Suker Traditions on this holiday! I know we thought of you!

Hey this is Karl, that guy who is married to your husband's cousin. I am helping your G-Ma Denny leave a comment, but it appears that you don't allow anonymous or guest comments. She said "I agree with your ideas about the 4th of July."

I am a big fan of Independence day also. It was sad to celebrate July 4th for the 1st time in a different country, but I did get to watch NYC fireworks on TV. It looks like you guys had a blast. Tell Brian I LOVE Glenn Beck and I am very jealous! I am glad there is a Canadian TV station that broadcasts his show. Also, Matt said he was proud of Brian's grilling skills :)
