"Well you look great!"

This phrase, “well you look great!” was one I hadn’t heard much before pregnancy. Let me give you a bit of context. This phrase usually gets thrown into a conversation around the time someone asks my due date. Right now it is becoming pretty obvious that unless I have some strange abdominal tumor I am pregnant, so the due date question comes up pretty frequently. After I let them know that no the date isn’t next month, but in fact sometime midsummer they usually respond with “well you look great!”, at which point I don’t know whether or not to laugh at the awkwardness of the situation or tell them just kidding May 1 is the day! I don’t understand what this phrase is supposed to mean, I understand it is one of those phrases used to fill awkward situations, and let’s face it commenting on when someone is going to go into labor and how much weight they have or have not gained is one of those less comfortable grey areas but still I am scratching my head in confusion. Does this phrase mean- “given that you are growing a human you still look sorta like a normal person”, or does it mean something along the lines of “wow, thought you were ready to pop any day now!”. Hmm… confusing, either way- apparently I look great…
