LIfe is Good!

I had a professor in college that always said “life is good”. When I first met her I was a bit puzzled by this, life was generally good, but some days weren’t as great as I hoped and I wasn’t sure I could apply this statement as freely to my life. I decided as an undergrad that I would adopt this philosophy and find at least one thing every day that made life good. At first this was challenging, there were things like rude customers at work, students that emailed me to no end, hours of homework, deadlines, and an uncertain future, but after a few weeks of consciously noting the blessings in my life I came around to her philosophy. Life is good!

Some days life is good has been as simple as finding a folded pair of socks (if you hated laundry as much as I do you would understand), an email from a friend, or blackberries on sale at sprouts, some days the things have been bigger, like a new job, a new nephew, or a new house. Whatever life has brought this philosophy has brought so much joy and appreciation for blessings in my life.

I shared this philosophy with my Sunday school class at the beginning of the year. They are 13 and looked at me like I was insane (if you have every taught this age you know that is the general reaction). We start every week with each class member sharing one reason life has been good over the previous week. At first they were really reluctant to share, most people opted to “pass” rather than share, but after almost 4 months I am happy to report I have worn them down, and now they freely offer their reasons. Most come up with several reasons why they have been blessed. Our answers started with things like passing a math test, or winning a basketball game, but slowly and surely those answers have evolved to include bigger things like time spent with family and the gospel in their lives. So the philosophy that once seemed strange to me has been passed on to another group, and slowly but surely it is spreading- life is good!
