So tonight I was sitting at home watching Numb3rs (Brian was out of town fishing and I had a long week at work) and guess what the episode was about... EPIDEMIOLOGY! I guess you might need a little bit more information. First let me give you some background on the show just in case you haven't ever seen it. There are two brothers, the older one is an FBI agent, the younger one is a brilliant mathematician. The older brother occasionally brings the younger brother in to help him solve crimes, with math... yes it sounds a bit cheesy but it is actually pretty interesting (I really like "Bones" too, so if you dont like that one you wont like this one either). Second, according to "Introduction to EPIDEMIOLOGY" by Merrill and Timmereck, Epidemiology is defined as the study of the distribution and detriments of health-related states or events in human populations and the application of this study to the prevention and control of health problems. Anyway this episode is dealing with what I can only assume is an "epidemic" (I have only watched a few minutes, I had to pause to tell you all about public health and tv) and the younger brother is trying to figure out where the epidemic originated (John Snow and cholera anyone?) and how many people will be infected within a given time period. Normally math doesn't interest me, I dont like things that I am not good at and math is definitely one of those things that I am NOT good at, but when they started talking I ACTUALLY knew what they were talking about. I immediately ran to the bookshelf and grabbed my epidemiology book to find the section that deals with these topics, as soon as I did that I was horrified, turns out I care more about epi than I thought (which I guess is good news since I am taking the graduate class in a week), but still I feel like a total nerd. Anyway I did find the section and I feel very proud of myself for even knowing where to look.
The cover of the book, just in case you want to buy it for a litte bit of light reading

looking up the equations... I know I am not cool, it's okay for you to think that too

I told you I was horrified that I knew where to look for the answer

Ha ha I do that sometimes when I see stuff on TV and feel totally nerdy, too! I don't know if you noticed, but the Mac PhotoBooth cameras flip the pictures so the title of your book is backwards. If I remember correctly about mine, you should be able to set it so that it doesn't do that. =)
I love that you knew exactly what they were talking about AND had a book on hand to coincide. Isn't it great when you actually learn something from a TV show? And if no one else does, at least you and I do!!
